A Walk with the Ancient Plants of Camosun Bog with Terry Taylor

Guide:

Terry Taylor has studied local plants and ecology for over 30 years and he has done rare plant surveys for environmental impact studies in various parts of BC. He belongs to several nature societies and leads field trips in the Vancouver area. In 2003 he received the Queen's Jubilee Medal for nature interpretation.

Special Instructions:

This is an easy walk on level ground, on good trails and baordwalks. Wear walking shoes. Walk is child-friendly. Rain or shine. Suggested donations of $5 - $10 welcome.

Description:

We will meet at 16th Avenue and Camosun Street at  1 PM and be back by 3 PM.

There were historically many bogs within the city limits of Vancouver. All but this one are now paved over. Camosun Bog contains unique plants adapted to living in the very special conditions created by this type of wetland. Peatlands like this sequester vast amouts of carbon. Camosun Bog in Pacific Spirit Park is one of the most successful rehabilitation projects in the Lower Mainland.

NOTE: We are a Non-Profit Society who is happy to give our volunteer time for these very important historical walks. In the two previous years of walks, MANY OF THOSE WHO DID REGISTER NEVER CAME to the planned walk. Some had registered groups of 3 or 5 people each. As a result, others who registered later were disappointed because our quota had been reached. Also the historians who had worked hard to prepare their material only spoke to a small number of people.

We ask that you ONLY REGISTER IF THERE IS A VERY GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL BE JOINING US on that day. Please be respectful of the work the organizers and historians are putting into these events and follow these guidelines. We look forward to seeing you at our walks!
